Faith in Action Brings Risks - and Rewards

"Learning to serve like Jesus involves 'risk' in being outside our comfort zones. Knowing that people are often uncomfortable with the 'risk' in reaching out, we created our Faith in Action projects with three levels of risk," explained Reverend Cameron Garven, ministries pastor at Bible Fellowship Church in Yardley, a suburb of Philadelphia.

Conduct a free yard sale

Collect yard sale items, such as clothing, books, dishes, furniture, etc., and hold a free yard sale either at your church or a location in a low-income area. Encourage a welcoming atmosphere by offering refreshments to shoppers. Advertise for the yard sale by posting flyers and signs in the community.

For over 100 years this faith-based, nonprofit organization has reached out to at-risk youth, the elderly, the homeless, people with disabilities, offenders returning from prison, and individuals recovering from addictions through human service programs in 400 communities in 44 states. Through diverse programs and volunteer opportunities, Volunteers of America addresses the unique needs of each community. Volunteer opportunities range from working in homes for disabled individuals to assisting teachers and staff in day care centers to aiding offenders in their transition from prison to our communities.
